Children's Classes

Creative Movement (3 yrs):

The very young dancer in identifies basic forms of movement through imaginative games, songs, music and rhythmical patterns as well as encourages taking turns and direction from the teacher.

 

Towards Ballet (4 yrs):

Young children explore dance through guided improvisations increasing rhythm and social skills using basic dance techniques. Fundamental positions and steps of ballet are introduced in a creative manner. This class is designed to inspire young dancers to express themselves through movement.

 

PreBallet & Tap Combo (5-6yrs)

A fun and imaginative combination of simple ballet and tap steps to encourage rhythm, flexibility and increase dance vocabulary. Emphasis is on learning fundamental positions and steps of ballet and tap while improving self-confidence and discipline in a positive and nurturing environment.

Presyllabus Ballet  (7-8yrs) 

This class is a prerequisite to Ballet Level 1 and emphasizes proper placement, vocabulary,

etiquette, developing strength, building endurance, and increasing flexibility through center and across the floor exercises.

Ballet Syllabus Level 1 (8-9yrs):

The goal of these classes is to teach the fundamentals of classical ballet to the student. This class focuses on basic ballet technique, proper body alignment, French terminology and musicality from the Vaganova style. Also takes Ballet Conditioning.

Ballet Syllabus Level 2 (9yrs & up):

Serious ballet training begins at this age. As with each level, students demonstrate a full understanding and focus on positions of the arms, direction of the body and increased movement vocabulary in the Vaganova style. Also takes Ballet Conditioning.

 

Ballet Syllabus Level 3 (11-12yrs):

Designed to increase understanding of the mechanics of the body relating to classical dance in the Vaganova style. Also takes Ballet Conditioning, PrePointe or Pointe.

Ballet Syllabus Level  4 (12-14yrs):

Focus is directed towards pre-professional training and performance abilities.  Intermediate dancers also take jazz, contemporary or hiphop as well. Also takes Ballet Conditioning, Pointe.

 

Ballet Syllabus Levels 5 & 6 (14yrs & up):

Focus is directed towards pre-professional training and performance abilities. Intermediate & Advanced dancers also take  jazz, contemporary, hiphop or modern as well. Also takes Ballet Conditioning, Pointe/Variations.

CoffeeMill's "Young Dance Collective" (8-18yrs):

Dancers are invited to participate in our pre-professional non-profit,Student Dance Company, called the "CoffeeMill Young Dance Collective". If they choose to be part of the company they will need to dedicate more time in order to rehearse for multiple performance opportunities throughout the year. Dancers involved are required to take their ballet syllabus classes plus 2 alternate styles such as jazz, lyrical, contemporary, tap or modern.

Hippity Hop (3.5-6yrs):

This high energy 45 minute class combines basic and fun hip hop moves with current age appropriate songs. Hip-hop encourages children to share their thoughts and feelings in creative ways. It supports children’s experimentation while building their self-esteem. The very young dancer identifies basic forms of movement through imaginative games, songs, music and rhythmical patterns as well as encourages taking turns and direction from the teacher.

Jazz/Hiphop Combo - Mini (7-9yrs):
This class is designed to help children develop confidence, muscle strength, coordination, musicality and self-expression while exploring basic jazz and hiphop vocabulary and technique.

Jazz/Hiphop Combo - Junior (9-13yrs):

This class is designed to help children develop confidence, muscle strength, coordination, musicality and self-expression while exploring basic jazz and hiphop vocabulary and technique.

Jazz Levels 1-6,  (8yrs & up):

Will focus on learning proper dance technique such as isolations of the body, improving performance quality and developing complex rhythms and patterns. Students will be exposed to many styles including traditional & contemporary jazz, Fosse, Street and Broadway using jazz, soul, R & B, ethnic and pop music to help develop a well rounded dancer. 

Hip Hop Levels 1-6,  (8yrs & up):

With the integration of R & B, street jazz and different styles of of hip hop, this class is a fun, positive and energetic experience that is geared towards the experienced mover/dancer, hip hop novice, or anyone who just wants to move!

Contemporary/Lyrical (8yrs & up):

This class is a fusion of ballet and jazz dance techniques. Movements in lyrical dance are characterized by fluidity and grace, with the dancer flowing seamlessly from one move to another, holding finishing steps as long as possible. Leaps are exceptionally high and soaring, and turns are fluid and continuous.

Contemporary (10yrs & up):

A style of expressive dance that combines elements of several dance genres including modern, jazz, lyrical and classical ballet. Contemporary dance tends to be intricate and physical. Dancers change levels and directions quickly and seamlessly utilizing abstract concepts and images. Must take a ballet class to attend this class.

Modern (9yrs & up):

Dancers will follow the classical modern technique of Horton. They'll focus on full body integration, developing strength and dynamic quality for performance in a creative, energetic and positive environment.

Tap:

Style of American theatrical dance, distinguished by percussive footwork, that marks out precise rhythmic patterns on the floor. Young students learn fundamental tap technique to enhance rhythm and motor skills.These classes are designed to help children develop confidence, muscle strength, coordination, musicality and self-expression.These classes are designed to help children develop confidence, muscle strength, coordination, musicality and self-expression.

 

Please Note! Ages are provided as a guide for placement.

New students, and/or students showing greater ability will be placed at the discretion of the instructor.

Adult Classes

Afro-Caribbean Dance
Learn dances, songs and rhythms from West Africa. Taught by Carol Brown, dancers are led though a warm-up and then progress into high energy dancing. Open class for  anyone who loves to dance! ALL AGES & LEVELS WELCOME! No experience necessary. Please come in comfortable clothing and bring a drum if you have one. Dancers will have the opportunity to perform a dance for the Goombay Festival. 

 

Ballet

Designed to expose the student to the grace and beauty of classical dance. Emphasis on the basic positions of the feet and arms as they relate to proper body alignment. Ballet training gives a dancer the strength and the control to execute any style of dance well.

 

Ballet Conditioning

In ballet, your core is one of the most important areas of movement and function while performing key ballet exercises. The core originates the majority of the full body movements that you perform. In this class we will help to strengthen, tone, and firm your core for peak performance. You may even find that you will break some of the bad habits developed in ballet class after finding your core strength.

 

Bellydance

Learn the basics of Middle Eastern and North African belly dance! Belly dance has existed for thousands of years and is a beautiful, artistic form of dance for women. It uses movements that are natural for the female physique which are combined artistically to form a sensuous, exciting dance form. Learn to do shimmies, floor work, layering and traditional hip movements to authentic music and rhythms. It is a fun and stimulating class, whether you would like a new form of exercise or to learn this dance as a performance art.

Explore many styles and techniques including traditional, theatre & contemporary jazz, Fosse, Broadway, Vegas and more using jazz, soul, R & B, ethnic and pop music.

Modern (Horton Technique)

Horton technique is an approach to dance that incorporated diverse elements including Native American dances and modern Jazz dance. It emphasizes a whole body, anatomical approach to dance that includes flexibility, strength, coordination and body and spacial awareness to enable unrestricted, dramatic freedom of expression.The primary focus of many Horton studies is to create length in the spine and hamstrings. There is also a strong emphasis on developing musicality and performance qualities. As students progress, exercises become longer and more complex.

Pointe

Pointe class can be taken on flat, 'broken downs' or in pointe shoes at the instructors discretion. All pointe classes are designed for students with previous ballet training. Students will utilize previously learned ballet technique while working in pointe shoes. Each class includes barre exercises, center floor work and across the floor combinations. These exercises focus on strengthening the feet and ankles.

Tap
